The Feuerle Collection is pleased to announce a new exceptional shakuhachi (尺八, traditional Japanese bamboo flute) concert with the renowned Japanese musician Reison Kuroda 黒田鈴尊. This special event will take place on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 7:30 pm in the unique setting of our collection space, organized in association with Doppelmond.
Reison Kuroda, an acclaimed master of the shakuhachi, will perform a selection of traditional Japanese pieces and contemporary compositions, bringing to life the rich cultural and philosophical heritage of this ancient bamboo flute. His virtuosity and emotive performances transport audiences into a world where sound and spirituality converge.
Kuroda studied shakuhachi under the esteemed Reibo Aoki and Shoji Aoki. He holds a master’s degree in Japanese traditional music from Tokyo University of the Arts and has premiered works by renowned composers such as Claude Ledoux and Denis Levaillant. His accolades include the top prizes at the Hidenori Tone Traditional Japanese Instruments Contest and the World Shakuhachi Competition in London.
The traditional Japanese flute shakuhachi, crafted from bamboo with a minimalist design, produces an ethereal sound that blends pure tones with air noise. Historically associated with Zen Buddhism rituals, it was used to achieve enlightenment through the meditative practice of Suizen (吹禅, meditation through flute music). The guiding principle of this music—Itton Jobutsu (一音成仏), achieving enlightenment with a single sound—resonates deeply with The Feuerle Collection’s tranquil atmosphere. The event will take place in the permanent collection space of our museum, surrounded by erotic photographic works by Japanese Photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, and ancient Imperial Chinese furniture, and it is a part of our institutional Performance Program, that aims at presenting the work of young Asian artists from the world of music and dance, that are based in Germany.
After a fully booked first concert in 2024, this year’s concert theme is “The Moon”, a symbol of mystery and serenity. In harmony with The Feuerle Collection spiritual essence, this evening promises a sensual and profound, otherworldly experience.
